And though 44 percent of the staff hired during the 2016-2017 school year were non-white, just 15 percent were black. Some trends in higher education move up and downâebbing and flowing with the economy and demographic shifts. The increase of Black faculty into academia is a great improvement; however, additional efforts are required in order to recruit, retain and support the success of Black faculty members in years to come.A well-known odd that stands against Black men can also be considered a prophecy of the likelihood for a prison sentence to occur at some point in their life. But many of the Ivy League colleges tend to do lateral hirings of established African-American academics from other institutions. Of all full-time faculty in degree-granting postsecondary institutions in fall 2018, some 40 percent were White males; 35 percent were White females; 7 percent were Asian/Pacific Islander males; 5 percent were Asian/Pacific Islander females; and 3 percent each were Black males, Black females, Hispanic males, and Hispanic females. Their numbers have not improved much since the late 1980s; according to the Digest of Education Statistics, 5.4% of professors were black in 2009, up from 5.1% in 1998. Therefore, we believe that a far more useful ranking of the flagship state universities is to compare their percentage of black faculty to the percentage of blacks in the population, and thus the work force of a given state. And the black student population at the business school remained unchanged for a decade: It was 5 percent last fall, the same as in 2008. Among the states with a significant black population of greater than 5 percent, the University of Massachusetts ranks the highest when we compare the level of black faculty to the black population of the state.
